Thatcham Blooms Blue for Dementia Action Week

Thatcham Broadway has been transformed as thousands of crocheted and knitted forget-me-not flowers have been lovingly installed as part of the Paint the Town Blue campaign for Dementia Action Week 2025.

The campaign, a community-driven initiative, aims to raise awareness and show support for those living with dementia and their families. Residents from across the area have contributed their time and talents, crafting thousands of symbolic blue flowers to turn the heart of the town into a vibrant, visual statement of compassion and unity.

“The response from the community has been truly overwhelming,” said Emily Moseley, Community Engagement Manager. “Each handcrafted flower not only raises awareness, but many arrived with heartfelt notes sharing memories, names, and stories of loved ones who are either living with dementia or who have sadly passed away from this devastating disease. We hope this display offers comfort and hope to anyone affected, reminds them that they are not alone, and shows all the support available in West Berkshire”

In addition to the display, a Dementia Action Week Party & Fundraising Event will take place this Friday from 10am at the Jubilee Sensory Garden on Brownsfield Road. The event promises a warm, welcoming atmosphere with tea, cake, live music, and opportunities for meaningful conversation.

Home Instead, a local care provider, will be on hand throughout the event to offer support to anyone who may need a little extra help. They will also be hosting an information session at 12:30pm, providing valuable advice and resources for those caring for someone with dementia or seeking more information about support options.

The public is encouraged to visit the Broadway to view the powerful installation and to join Friday’s gathering in support of dementia awareness.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the volunteers, crafters, and supporters who helped make this initiative a reality.
