Green Roof Bus Shelters Bring Wildlife and Fresh Air to Thatcham

Bus passengers in Thatcham are now able to enjoy a greener, cleaner journey thanks to the installation of four new bus shelters featuring living grass roofs – a first for West Berkshire.

The innovative shelters create mini green spaces around the town, providing a welcome boost for local biodiversity while offering a modern, attractive upgrade for passengers.

The living roofs help absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants, support pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies, and add pockets of greenery that enhance the look and feel of the town. They also play a role in reducing rainwater run-off and cooling the surrounding air in warmer months.

The hardy, low-maintenance planting is designed to thrive in all weather conditions, ensuring the shelters remain an asset for both the community and local wildlife for years to come.

The new shelters can be found at Paynesdown Road Westbound, Garden Centre Pound Lane Eastbound, Flagstaff Square Southbound and Braemore Close Westbound, with other traditional Barrel Roof shelters also being installed around the town to create a more pleasant wait.

The new shelters form part of a wider programme of improvements designed to make public transport in Thatcham more sustainable, reliable, and attractive for residents and visitors alike.
